Temporary Travel Ban for Iranian Visitor Visa Holders

Share

Immigration Update: 25 March 2026

The Australian Government has announced a temporary travel restriction affecting Iranian nationals who hold Australian visitor visas.

According to public statements made on Wednesday by the Minister for Home Affairs, Tony Burke, Iranian visitor visa holders will be barred from travelling to Australia for a period of six months. This measure has been introduced in response to ongoing international security concerns linked to regional conflict.

What we understand so far

Based on information released Wednesday, 25 March:

  • The restriction applies to Iranian nationals who currently hold a visitor visa
  • The ban is temporary and intended to operate for six months
  • Affected visa holders will not be permitted to travel to Australia during this period, even if their visa remains valid
  • This is a travel restriction, not a visa cancellation

Further operational detail (including whether any exemptions will apply) is expected to be clarified by the Department of Home Affairs.

Who may be affected?

This announcement is particularly relevant for:

  • Individuals outside Australia holding a visitor visa
  • Employers, families or sponsors expecting visitors from Iran
  • Clients with planned travel to Australia in the coming months
  • Individuals currently in Australia who have plans to travel outside of Australia

What should visa holders do now?

  • Do not attempt to travel to Australia while the restriction is in place
  • Monitor official Department of Home Affairs updates as further guidance is released
  • Seek advice before making alternative visa or travel arrangements
  • If your travel out of Australia is not necessary, we suggest postponing this travel
